U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole Visited Sugar Mountain Ski Resort
Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, Village of Sugar Mountain, NC – United States Senator Elizabeth Dole arrived at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort punctually at 12 Noon on Saturday, February 23, 2008. She was welcomed by a full house of winter enthusiasts. As she strolled through the bustling base lodge, Senator Dole stopped to shake hands and talk with many of Sugar’s patrons. She even posed for a picture with Sugar Mountain Ski Resort’s mascot, Sugar Bear. A leisurely Bavarian lunch of bratwurst, knockwurst, red cabbage and potato salad followed. The camaraderie and easy-going conversation went quickly but not before Senator Dole took the time to speak with Avery County media representatives.
"What an honor it is," exclaimed Sugar Mountain Resort President, Gunther Jochl, "to host such an accomplished and graceful lady."
Elizabeth Dole is a native of Salisbury, North Carolina. She has served five United States Presidents. In February 1983, Elizabeth Dole joined President Reagan’s Cabinet as Secretary of Transportation – the first woman to hold that position. Elizabeth Dole was sworn in by President Bush as the nation’s 20th Secretary of Labor in January 1989. In 1991 Mrs. Dole became the second woman since founder Clara Barton to serve as President of the American Red Cross and in November of 2002 she won 54% of the vote to serve the people of North Carolina in the United States Senate.
